ASEAN visits three local waste management facilities and a waste management company in Bali, Indonesia

AUGUST 2024

Bali, Indonesia, 21 August 2024: As part of the Knowledge Exchange Program (KEP) 2024 organized by the SEA-MaP Regional Project, participants embarked on the first day of the Study Tour by visiting three local waste management facilities and a local waste management company. The visits were organized in collaboration with the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), and the local government and organizations in Bali, Indonesia.

The first stop, the Mengwitani Integrated Waste Management Facility, showcased their waste sorting process and large-capacity incinerators for residue disposal. Next, at the Sapuh Jagat Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (3R) Waste Management Facility, participants witnessed a whole-of-community approach to waste treatment – they placed an emphasis on the connection between proper waste management practices and a healthy environment.

In the afternoon, participants visited ecoBali, a local company specializing in waste collection, recycling, and composting services. The participants observed how a sustainable waste management approach can be transformed into a viable business model, where the company collects segregated inorganic waste from customers and waste banks and sells it to third parties. The day concluded with a visit to the Panca Lestari 3R Waste Management Facility, which focused on women’s empowerment, awareness raising, and the collective implementation of waste segregation practices by record-keeping the attendance of community members when disposing their waste at the facility.

The study tour to the four sites provided an opportunity for participants to gain valuable insights into innovative approaches and solutions to waste management, including in plastic waste, particularly the methods employed by local champions to instil behavioral change at the community level. Participants actively engaged in discussion amongst each other and with the facilities’ administrators, exchanging views and questions regarding the activities surrounding waste management practices that were shared at the various sites.
