SEA-MaP Knowledge Exchange Program (KEP) 2025 Study Tour: Practical Exposure to Circular Packaging and Recycling in Malaysia

NOVEMBER 2025

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 20 November 2025: The first day of the SEA-MaP Knowledge Exchange Program (KEP) 2025 study tour introduced participants to how Malaysia is applying Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) through private sector initiatives and community-based programmes.

The day began at Ajinomoto Malaysia, where the participants were welcomed into the company’s production area to learn how sustainability considerations are being integrated into everyday operations. Ajinomoto shared how its approach to circular packaging aligns with Malaysia’s evolving EPR framework, particularly the shift from voluntary action to mandatory requirements. The participants had the chance to observe how product design, packaging choices, and waste reduction practices come together to support responsible production. The visit also offered insights into how partnerships with local waste collectors and community programmes help support take-back and recycling activities, forming an important bridge between industry and national EPR development.

In the afternoon, participants visited the IPC Recycling and Buy-Back Centre at IPC Shopping Mall. The Centre demonstrated how public engagement and incentives can encourage better waste segregation and recycling behaviour. Participants had the opportunity to try the facility’s system and observe the sorting and collection process, offering insights into how community-level actions support wider goals for improved materials recovery.

The first day highlighted different entry points for strengthening EPR—from manufacturing practices to public participation—and offered participants practical observations relevant to their national contexts.
